Hi, it's Misty again. The research we're doing, trying to curb the paparazzi in LA (yeah, I know, good luck), has shown that many of the papz in LA are illegals from Brazil, and other countries, and that most, if not all, of them drive new SUV's, or new cars. Is it a coincidence that the city with the most hit-and-runs in the nation also has the largest paparazzi population? What other illegal do you know of could afford a brand new SUV? In CA, new cars have up to 6 months to drive before being required to display a license plate. I've got more info if you like, just ask. Thanks.

Since some of these hit and runs are committed by illegals, AND by cars with no license plates, why not ask the legislation to have car dealers issue license plates before the car drives off the lot. Don't allow cars time to drive with no license plates. Check out FL laws on this - every car is plated from the time of purchase, leaving no time on the road without a license plate. It would make the vehicle easier to identify - a witness could see it, a surveillance camera could pick up the plate.

Thank you so much for your post and your thoughts. And your suggestions! I'm trying to start something similar in Oregon/Washington, but haven't gotten very far and know few contacts. We actually held a hit-and-run rally that all Portland TV stations recorded and none ended up showing. This was promoted by the friends and family of 18 year old Michael Vu and 28 year old Dustin Finney, killed July 30, 2011, and August 12, 2011, respectively. Miky's killer got 18 months only and Dustin's 5 years. I will keep following your blog.

According to the California DMV website, "The DMV will revoke your driver license if you are convicted of a hit-and-run or reckless driving that resulted in injury." I wonder how often that actually happens. I also wonder how quickly and easily someone can get their license back. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/hdbk/actions_vandalism_judge.htm

I think part of the reason it's so hard to get them to consider revoking someone's right to drive is that driving, having access to a car and transportation, is nearly akin to breathing, especially in places like CA where the car is king. Ok, that's pretty much everywhere except New York where a lot of people just don't own cars. The idea of being without a car in this society strikes most people as something close to the end of the world. I think that's the mindset that needs to change.

A very sensible policy recommendation, if you ask me. Numbers 1-3 seem like no-brainers. Number 4 might be a little tougher to legislate, but is well worth discussion. The hard part is, how do we get the state legislature to do something about this? And, perhaps more important, how do we get our car-loving governor to sign such a law?

It amazes me that point #2 is not already in place. Seems like an obvious and appropriate response for someone who has proven themselves irresponsible behind the wheel. Unfortunately it seems like the right to drive is held sacred. Even those convicted of hit and run who receive jail time are not having their licenses revoked or even temporarily suspended. The law really need to be updated as mentioned in point #1 to make it match with DUI laws. This needs to happen now!

    Thanks for this reminder.
